About Freshwater Cultured Pearls: These exquisite pearls are ethically gathered from freshwater lake and river mollusks. Most freshwater pearls originate from China and can range from mostly round to off-round shapes. They bear a resemblance to Akoya pearls, making them an ideal choice for a sophisticated look on a budget. While they might be slightly less symmetrical, smaller, or not as easily matched as some other types, these minor differences contribute to their significant value.
Cultivation of Pearls: Pearls are naturally produced within the bodies of salt and freshwater mollusks, such as oysters and mussels. When an irritant, like a tiny grain of sand, enters the mollusk, it responds by producing a soft coating of calcium carbonate around it, eventually forming a pearl. Since perfectly round, naturally produced pearls are incredibly rare, the cultivation process was developed in the early 1900s. This involves delicately inserting a small, polished shell bead (the nucleus) into the mollusk's mantle as an irritant. It typically takes approximately 20-24 months of careful husbandry to cultivate a saltwater pearl, and slightly less time for freshwater pearls. The pearl harvest usually occurs during the months of June and September.
About Sterling Silver: Sterling silver is a durable alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, including copper, zinc, nickel, germanium, and platinum. The addition of these other metals serves to harden and strengthen the silver. Fine silver, which is 99.9% pure silver, is considerably softer than sterling silver and is not practical for everyday wear as jewelry.
Perfect for gifting or enhancing your everyday style and fashion accessories collection.
